Lets start from the beginning first, there was Oil of Olay . Then, there was micro-dermabrasion and botox. now the latest youth-obsessed beauty craze? BB cream.
We all know we don’t need another beauty product cluttering up our bathroom counters. Now I bet your wondering what the heck BB and I know your really puzzled about CC creams? The question of the day is Does Women of Color Really Need Them?
The Break Down.
What is BB Cream?
BB Creams: Stands for Beauty Balms, Blemish Balms, or Beauty Base — These Creams are known to be the holy grail, of all beauty products. Forget about the ole school 7-step facial regimen. BB creams are the new 1 step process that will replace your old serum, moisturizer, sunblock, and light foundation.
Are BB Creams Too Good To Be True?
Maybe. This maybe true whether or on its too good to be true but it totally depends on what you’re looking for.
Most BB Creams on the market offer sufficient SPF protection and may have some moisturizing properties. When looking for a good BB cream want to search for creams that contain:
- Anti-aging components, including peptides and antioxidants such as vitamins A, E, and C;
- Moisturizing workhorses like hyaluronic acid and glycerin;
- Ingredients such as licorice and arbutin that help even out skin tone;
- Light-reflecting mica to give skin a luminous finish; and,
- Silicone-based ingredients, such as dimethicone, that help smooth the skin, acting much like a foundation primer does.
MAC Prep & Prime Beauty Balm are good ones to try out. While some have claimed that BB Creams Have replaced there foundation it does provide a nice base or primer. Most BB Colors on the market, is ghastly. if you find on that you can use I suggest you try it out and see if it works for you. As for me personally I cant wear it alone.
So, Do Women of Color Even Need BB Cream?
In a Huffington Post article, Dr. Rehana Ahmed notes “[w]omen of color frequently complain about dark spots left on their skin after a pimple goes away and uneven skin tone. The sunscreens in BB creams can prevent dark spots from getting darker and contribute to a more even skin tone.”
Who doesn’t want to fade dark spots?
Here are three options that are specifically formulated for dark skin tones:

Overall, its totally up to you. At the end of the day, they really do have a nice texture and provide SPF, but If you can’t justify a $20 – $30 purchase when a simple purchase of virgin coconut oil does just as good of a job smoothing and evening out skin tones for a fraction of the price, and with no chemicals. You make the the choice that will agree with your budget.
